A Gate Is Only As Good As The Opening It Has To Fit.

A pair of gates closing an opening in a red brick boundary wall, clad in profiled steel sheet and hung on posts at the brick returns either side. The leaves meet in the middle and sit roughly on the line of the wall, so the gate reads as part of the boundary rather than as something bolted onto the front of it. To the right of the opening, three steel uprights stand against the brickwork. The footpath and verge in front of it are public.
It is the plainest job in this set, and the one where the tolerances show soonest. A gate is looked at, walked past and pulled on every day by people who will notice within a week if the two leaves have stopped lining up.

The wall was there first
The brick returns fix the opening. The frames, the posts and the gap the two leaves need between them all come off a measure of the wall as it was actually built, not as it was meant to be built.
Two leaves have to keep agreeing
Lining up on day one is easy. Staying lined up is a question of how the frames are braced and how the posts are set, because a gate that starts to drop cannot be talked back into square.
A gate on a boundary lives outdoors
It stands in the weather on a public footpath and it is not going to get maintained. What the frame and the sheeting are finished with is what decides how it looks in five years, so it belongs in the quote rather than in the assumptions.
Work on a boundary is public work
An opening onto a footpath cannot be left open, unsafe or half-hung at the end of the day. That shapes how the job is sequenced far more than the steel itself does.
