A Frame Made To Fit A Round Hole In The Dark.

Our own photograph, taken by torchlight in a confined plant pit. It is the least photogenic job on this page and the one that best shows what access really costs.

What You Are Looking At

The photograph, described.

A fabricated frame in heavy plate, with triangular gussets welded along the top of it and holes drilled through for fixing, sitting over a circular pit lined with concrete rings. The only light is a torch. The walls and soffit are rough, unlined concrete, close enough on every side to see in the same frame as the steel. A boot and a leg at the bottom of the picture give you the scale of the space.

The steel is straight and the pit is round, which is the whole problem in one line. The frame had to be made to bear on what is there, a concrete opening built long before the steel was thought about, and then it had to get down there and go into place in a hole a person can only just work in.

The Trade In It

What A Job In A Hole Like This Takes.

Access decides the design

A frame like this has to be sized to get through the opening above it, not only to fit the pit below it. The way it is broken up, the order it goes in and where the joints fall are all set by the hole, not by what would be tidiest to fabricate.

Measured off concrete, not paper

Nothing about an existing pit is nominal. The bearing surfaces, the diameter and the fixing positions all come off a measure taken down there, and the holes are drilled to that measure before the frame goes anywhere near the site.

The gussets are the engineering

The triangular plates welded along the top are what turn a flat plate into something that will not flex. They are the cheapest stiffness available and they are only worth anything if the welds behind them are sound.

Slower, on purpose

Marking, drilling and fitting in a confined space by torchlight takes longer than the same work on a workshop floor. That is the honest cost of a job like this, and it is better in the quote than discovered on the day.

The services behind this job

The facts strip below is deliberately part-empty. The photograph is ours and the description above is what it shows, but we have not been told what this frame carries, whose plant it is in or how long the job ran, and we are not prepared to guess at any of it in print.
