Southern Suburbs

Steelwork Across Perth's Southern Industrial Belt.

Welshpool, Bibra Lake and Henderson are where Perth makes and fixes things. The work that comes out of this region leans away from new frames and towards keeping existing structure and plant running, and most of it happens inside somebody else's site rules.

What The Belt Asks For

Mostly Not New Steel. Steel That Has To Keep Working.

Welshpool, Bibra Lake, Henderson and the pockets around them are full of workshops, yards, transport depots and processing operations that have already been built. What they need is steelwork done to something that exists, usually while it is still in use.

Repairs and modifications to existing structure

Cracked and damaged members, corroded sections, brackets and supports that have been loaded differently since the day they went in, and structure that needs cutting and re-making because the equipment around it changed. The measuring matters more than the fabricating: what is on the drawing and what is on site are rarely the same thing after twenty years of modifications.

Access steel: platforms, walkways, stairs, handrails

Getting people safely to the thing they have to service. This is steady work in an industrial area because plant gets added long after the building was designed, and the way to reach it gets improvised until somebody writes it up. Fabricated to the dimensions we take on site, so it fits around the plant rather than through it.

Mobile welding, because the work cannot leave

Plenty of what needs welding in this region is bolted to a floor, plumbed into something, or simply too big to move. Workshop and mobile welding both exist for that reason: the workshop when the part can come to us, mobile when it cannot.

Trades hired out to other shops

The belt is dense with fabrication shops, and their workload moves in lumps. Welders, boilermakers, fabricators, trade assistants and scaffolders go out on short-term, long-term and project work, to builders, to industrial sites, and to other fabricators who are simply short-handed this month.

Working To Somebody Else's Rules

On An Industrial Site, You Do Not Set The Hours.

This is the real difference between an industrial job and a domestic one, and it is why the questions we ask before quoting are different too. The host site controls the access, the paperwork and the window, so the quote has to be built around their process, not ours.

  • Inductions and site requirements. Most sites here run their own induction and their own PPE and ticket requirements. Tell us whose site it is and what they need, and that becomes part of the program instead of a delay on the morning.
  • Permits and isolations. Hot work in an operating facility usually means a permit, screening, a fire watch, and detection or suppression isolated and reinstated. That is time, and it is honest to price it rather than absorb it and rush.
  • Windows that do not move. If a line, a workshop or a yard is only down for a set period, everything possible has to be fabricated, trial-fitted and staged before it starts. That is a fabrication decision made weeks earlier, not a decision made on the day.
  • Measure while it is still running. Wherever a site will allow it, the measure and the access check happen before the shutdown, so the window is spent installing rather than working out what is there.

Canning Vale And Jandakot

The Lighter End Of The Same Region.

Not everything south is heavy. Canning Vale and Jandakot read more like distribution and trade tenancies than plant: warehousing, workshops, transport and service businesses in newer buildings. The work follows the buildings: mezzanines and office platforms rather than structural repairs, dock and yard steel rather than shutdown work, gates and security steel rather than work inside an operating facility.

It is worth saying which of the two ends of this region you are in when you enquire, because they need different questions asked. A tenancy fitout in Canning Vale and a repair inside an operating facility in Welshpool are quoted almost nothing alike.
